This was my first weekend with Qatar Foundation International and UT-Austin's Teacher Leadership Program, and oh my goodness, it was wonderful. I taught on Thursday and headed immediately to the airport, where I met the fellow Minnesotan in the program, Brielle. She teaches in Grand Rapids and flew down from Duluth, and we were on the same flight to Austin. We got there pretty late but met some other teachers (and the program director) in the lobby, said a quick hello, and headed to our rooms. (The rooms are AMAZING!) Friday morning came early, and our schedule was jam-packed. But, it started with some pretty awesome swag! Mona Atia, Associate Professor of Geography and International Affairs at the George Washington University, gave a two-day workshop on geography of the Middle East, and I learned so much. Most of the educators in the program are social studies teachers, and I feel so ignorant compared to them. But, I am going to love learning! We had a great dinner together at a fun spot in Austin and had a blast getting to know one another in a more social setting. We continued the workshop with Professor Atia on Saturday, and that evening, we went to an awesome movie theater to watch short films from the Middle East (and enjoy dinner while viewing). It was so much fun. This morning was spent constructing lesson plans. I am working with Lindsay, a middle school art teacher from Chicago, and we are writing a unit called "Narrative Mapping." It should be pretty cool! After, a few of us rented scooters and puttered around campus. It was beautiful -- and so much fun! Then, it was time to head back home. I already can't wait for our next session -- Dearborn in April!
